We are pleased to announce that Pure Oil NZ, in collaboration with the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR), has been nominated as a finalist in the prestigious 2024 Arable Awards. Our joint initiative, the Oilseed Rape Monitor Farms project, has been shortlisted for the “Working Together Award,” a recognition that underscores the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable agriculture.

The Ongoing Journey of the Monitor Farm Program

Launched in 2020, our Monitor Farm Study was designed with a clear and ambitious goal: to boost the average yield of oilseed rape to 5.3 metric tonnes per hectare by 2023. This initiative, aptly named “5.3 by 2023,” was not just about hitting numbers but about exploring the depths of agronomy to uncover the best practices that could lead to sustainable yield improvements.

At the heart of this program is our Agronomy Manager, Keith Gundry, whose dedication and expertise have been pivotal to its success. Keith has worked tirelessly alongside FAR and local growers to delve into critical aspects such as targeted nitrogen application, optimal Green Area Index (GAI) readings, and soil management practices like reducing compaction. His leadership in experimenting with bio-stimulants has also been a key factor in enhancing crop performance.

By 2023, our efforts, guided by Keith’s hard work, had led to an impressive average yield of 4.95 mt/ha, and in 2024, we maintained strong performance with 4.74 mt/ha. These results, while short of our ultimate goal, highlight the significant strides we’ve made in understanding the factors that drive oilseed rape yields. More importantly, they reflect the ongoing potential for further improvement as we continue to refine our practices and push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Why This Recognition Matters

crops

Being named a finalist in the 2024 Arable Awards is not just a nod to the hard work of our team and collaborators but a recognition of the positive environmental and economic impact that can be achieved through dedicated research and cooperation. The Monitor Farm Program has not only enhanced yields but has also contributed to more sustainable farming practices by reducing nitrogen application and improving soil health.

This nomination comes at a time when the arable sector is facing numerous challenges, from rising costs to variable returns. Yet, as noted by Federated Farmers’ arable chair David Birkett, it is precisely during these tough times that innovation and commitment shine brightest. The awards celebrate those who are pushing the industry forward, and we are honoured to be among those recognised for our contributions.

Looking Ahead

The Monitor Farm Program is far from over. The insights gained so far, thanks in large part to Keith’s leadership and the dedication of our growers, have opened new avenues for further research, particularly in the areas of disease control and the fine-tuning of nitrogen and bio-stimulant practices. As we continue this program, our aim is not only to meet our initial yield targets but also to set new standards for sustainable oilseed production in New Zealand.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to FAR, our dedicated Agronomy team, and the hard working growers who have been integral to this project.
