Protein Meals for New Zealand Dairy Cows
Our range of protein meals is designed for use in New Zealand dairy cow feeding systems, supplying high quality plant protein to support milk production, body condition and overall performance. Produced from locally grown oilseed crops and processed in New Zealand, our rapeseed/canola, sunflower and full fat rapeseed/canola meals offer flexible options to suit different diets, seasons and feeding strategies. Suitable for New Zealand pasture-based and supplementary dairy systems.
Our Most Popular Protein Meal for Dairy
Unlike many imported alternatives, our canola meal is proudly produced in New Zealand. We work closely with New Zealand arable farms to grow oilseed crops that are then locally cold pressed and extruded, producing a high protein, energy dense feed with valuable residual oil to support milk production and cow condition.

HIGH PROTEIN
High Protein
Our oilseed meals supply valuable plant protein for dairy rations. Our canola meal contains 35% protein.

ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS
Essential Amino Acids
Canola meal provides a highly useful amino acid profile for dairy cows and is naturally rich in methionine, helping support milk production and cow condition.

HIGH ENERGY
High Energy
Formulated for high energy density. The rich oil content provides a crucial boost during early lactation to maintain cow condition, drive milk production, and significantly improve in-calf rates.
INCREASE BYPASS PROTEIN
Increase Bypass Protein
Up to 50% of the protein in our cold pressed and carefully extruded canola meal may bypass the rumen, delivering valuable amino acids directly to the intestine to support milk production.

MADE IN NEW ZEALAND
Made in New Zealand
Proudly 100% local. We partner with arable farms around the South Island to grow our oilseed crops and cold-press all of our meals in Rolleston, guaranteeing maximum freshness, premium quality, and full traceability for your herd.

12%-40% OIL CONTENT
12%-40% Oil Content
Delivering a natural energy boost, the 12% oil content in our extruded canola meal actively decreases the overall starch load. These monounsaturated fats provide vital energy without upsetting sensitive rumen microbes. Our full fat meal offers 40% oil content as a high energy additive.

FAQs
The Extruded Rapeseed/Canola and Extruded Sunflower are both highly free-flowing. You can run them smoothly as straight feeds through your standard silos, augers, and in-shed automated systems without worrying about them bridging or blocking up. The full-fat meal is an additive with very high oil content and use in feed systems may depend on your set up.
Yes. Canola meal contributes protein, energy and residual oil that help cows maintain body condition through late gestation and early lactation. Research shows that good transition nutrition and fat inclusion can improve pregnancy to service, and our own customer feeding trials using canola meal have also reported strong improvements in herd in calf rates when included in balanced dairy rations.
Oilseed meals provide a valuable combination of protein, energy and useful residual oil, which can help support milk production, milk components and cow condition. Canola meal in particular has consistently performed well in dairy research because it supplies both highly useful protein and extra dietary energy compared with more stripped out meals. Cold pressed canola meals naturally retain more oil content and therefore its believed some of these benefits may be increased.
Yes. Dairy research has shown that diets including canola meal can reduce methane intensity compared with some other protein sources while maintaining or improving milk production. The residual oil naturally present in canola meal influences rumen fermentation and can suppress methane formation. Meals produced through cold pressing retain more natural oil than highly defatted meals, which may enhance this benefit depending on the overall diet.
Yes. Multiple dairy studies, including a meta analysis of 27 experiments, found that replacing other protein sources with canola meal increased milk yield and milk protein yield in lactating dairy cows. More recent work has shown canola meal can improve milk production and, in some systems, body condition as well.
The meal retains 9–12% oil. If you are producing pellets, this higher oil content acts as a natural binder, helping to hold the finished product together.
It is a powerhouse supplement containing 34–36% Crude Protein and high metabolisable energy (13+ MJ/kg), significantly exceeding traditional grains.
Extruding the meal after cold pressing improves both digestibility and palatability. The high protein solubility makes it suitable for monogastric animals (like pigs and poultry) as well as ruminants. Extruding after extracting oil with cold pressing allows the optimal amount of heat to be applied, prioritising high quality meal as opposed to prioritising maximum oil extraction.
No. It is produced via a cold pressing process, meaning no added chemicals are used. This preserves fats, vitamins, and essential amino acids (like Lysine and Methionine) better than solvent-extracted meals.
No. Pure Oil NZ sources exclusively “GE Free” oilseed rape from New Zealand arable farmers.
